The programme of the largest design and architecture festival in the Nordic countries includes over a hundred events. Included are exhibitions and installations, a PechaKucha Night and other presentations, parties, sales events, open doors, fashion shows, and so much more for both the general public and professionals in the field. Most of Helsinki Design Week’s events are free of charge.
In 2023, the main event venue for the festival will be the Merikortteli in Punavuori. The sixth-floor Main Exhibition, curated by Ulla Koskinen, will showcase a great everyday life. The exhibition stage will feature a daily changing programme of discussion that offers interesting perspectives for professionals, students and the general public. The ground-floor exhibition spaces will present content from a diverse group of designers. There will also be a pop-up wine bar serving customers during the Main Exhibition.
The fast-paced PechaKucha Night is based on the presentation format of Klein & Dytham, an architectural firm from Tokyo, where speakers have only 20 images and 20 seconds per image. A lot can be said in six minutes and forty seconds. Over the years, Helsinki Design Week has featured inspiring speeches on topics such as gardens, fonts, the climate crisis, spas, road signs, new materials, structural racism, and dessert trends.
Helsinki Design Week will organize PechaKucha Night in collaboration with Aalto University in Otaniemi on September 6. It will take place in a lecture hall designed by Alvar Aalto. The PechaKucha Night is part of the opening celebrations for the Designs for a Cooler Planet student exhibition. The event will feature ten inspiring speakers from creative fields. The presentations will be in English.
