In Helsinki in November Etnosoi!, one of Finland’s most important world music festivals, offers colorful and touching experiences from around the world. Korjaamo is the venue of the international guest artists: Leyla McCalla (US) and Dizu Plaatjies & The Ibuyambo Ensemble (South Africa).
LEYLA McCALLA
The American musician Leyla McCalla is probably familiar to many from the group Carolina Chocolate Drops, who performed at the Helsinki Festival in 2013 (“one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen”, wrote an enthusiastic Mari Koppinen in Helsingin Sanomat). Now she proceeds steadily on her own path as a solo artist, whose intimate interpretations appeal to friends of all sorts of roots music. She draws influences from blues and creole music as well as oldtime jazz, and also investigates her own Haitian roots
DIZU PLAATJIES & THE IBUYAMBO ENSEMBLE
Dizu Plaatjies and his Ibuyambo ensemble plays, sings and dances inspired from the rich traditions of southern Africa. Plaatjies is a luminous singer and multi instrumentalist, who forges fascinating melodies and wild energy especially from his marimba. With an open mind he combines different traditions from his country with own songs and lyrics, resulting in sparkling and energetic neo-traditional music.
During many decades Dizu Plaatjies has performed on the most prestigious stages of the world, like the Carnegie Hall in New York. He was also one of Nelson Mandela’s trusted musicians.
