Oiro Pena is a mysterious jazz collective known for its ability to reinvent itself time and again. A few years ago, international music media brought Oiro Pena out of the shadows of the Finnish mainstream—and with good reason. The band’s records sell out quickly, and every performance radiates a rare emotional intensity seldom encountered in contemporary jazz.
Is Oiro Pena a single individual or a collective? That remains an open question. The band’s music powerfully blends the traditions of spiritual jazz with Finnish folk music—a union in which the Finnish language sits naturally. Oiro Pena moves effortlessly from songs exuding a yearning for freedom to interpretations of classics.
