Grammy-nominated harmonica player Mark Hummel has assembled a true all-star lineup, featuring guitarists Jr Watson and Anson Funderburgh, drummer Wes Starr, and bassist Bill Stuve.
Mark Hummel Blues All Stars is a premier ensemble in American blues. The group is fronted by Mark Hummel—a Grammy-nominated harmonica player, singer, songwriter, and bandleader—who has been one of the most respected figures in the blues scene since the 1980s. Joining him are West Coast blues guitar legend Jr Watson, Texas blues master Anson Funderburgh, veteran drummer Wes Starr, and bassist Bill Stuve.
Hummel’s career truly took off in 1985, when his band, Mark Hummel’s Blues Survivors, began touring the United States full-time. Since then, Hummel has appeared on over 30 recordings and established himself as one of the most renowned masters of the traditional blues harmonica.
Hummel’s musical roots trace back to the great pioneers of the blues, such as Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Little Walter. His 2014 album, *Remembering Little Walter*, earned him a Grammy nomination and two Blues Music Awards. On his more recent album, *Road Dog*, the interplay between harmonica and guitar is particularly powerful, featuring collaborations with Anson Funderburgh and Junior Watson. "Mark Hummel is a harmonica god," raved *Blues Revue*.
Jr Watson is a true guitar legend of West Coast blues. Since 1975, he has played on over 200 blues recordings and collaborated with artists such as Rod Piazza, Canned Heat, Kim Wilson, Charlie Musselwhite, and William Clarke. Watson’s distinctive playing style has influenced countless contemporary blues guitarists around the world.
Anson Funderburgh is recognized as one of the most significant guitarists in Texas blues. His identifiable sound, precise phrasing, and tight, punchy soloing have established him as one of the most highly regarded guitarists in modern blues.
The rhythm section consists of Wes Starr—who has played with the likes of Willie Nelson, Delbert McClinton, Marcia Ball, and Asleep at the Wheel—alongside Bill Stuve. Stuve served as the bassist for Rod Piazza’s band, The Mighty Flyers, for an impressive 30 years and has also worked with blues and rhythm & blues legends such as Big Joe Turner, Otis Rush, and Little Milton.
