Neset's music combines virtuoso playing, rhythmic inventiveness and broad compositional thinking. In addition to jazz, his expression draws influences from classical music, progressive rock and orchestral thinking – but the whole is always recognizably Neset's own. Taking up the saxophone at the age of eight, Neset rose to become one of Europe's most interesting jazz talents in his twenties, and his final breakthrough came with the acclaimed Golden Xplosion album in 2011. Since then, he has released several acclaimed albums for, among others, Edition Records and the ACT label.
The Marius Neset quartet features the top musicians of contemporary European jazz. Keyboardist Elliot Galvin and bassist Conor Chaplin are from London, and Copenhagen is represented by Swedish-Norwegian drummer Anton Eger. The band's music also seamlessly intertwines composed and improvised material, and intense ensemble playing, rhythmic energy, and constant movement keep the music alive and unpredictable.
Neset's latest album, Cabaret (ACT, 2025), is a celebration of friendship and music – and a testament to the band's unique chemistry. Recorded on a remote Norwegian island, the album pulsates with playfulness, melodic richness, and rhythmic boldness.
