Kimmo Pohjonen’s Hallowed Lungs is a work for accordion, organ, and electronics, in which embodied breathing, electric current, and the massive architecture of air engage in dialogue with one another. In the piece, the history of the instruments – the sanctity of the organ and the earthiness of the accordion – does not create conflict but generates tension, giving rise to a new space. Hallowed Lungs sanctifies that which was previously excluded and carries a longing for pure air to breathe, as well as a dream of peace. The work continues the collaboration of the performing trio Pohjonen & Helenius & Norvio, which began with the 2017 premiere of the Ultra Organ.
