Female Choir KYN
Conducted by Kaija Viitasalo
In the autumn 2018 KYN ordered suites from three Finnish composers, Mikko Hassinen, Kirmo Lintinen and Riikka Talvitie. Texts were chosen from a book Yö ja lasi (Night and Glass) (2018) by an awarded poet Harry Salmenniemi.
In the Evening Longing concert KYN premieres the first of these commissions, Illalla (In the Evening) by Mikko Hassinen. Live electronics by Mikko Hassinen himself and spoken texts from the background tape intertwine in this five movement nocturnal suite. According to Hassinen, his goal has been to approach the harmonies and atmosphere of Illalla (In the Evening) from the Scandinavian jazz perspective. He sees the text as a portrayal of a nocturnal mental landscape. "Nightly setting mingles with memories surging into ones mind. Memories that feel painful but can also be comforting. At times, behind the melancholy there is a glimpse of hope." tells Mikko Hassinen about his composition.
Also the other pieces heard in the concert takes the listener to the same ambiance. Music from Juan Manuel Conejo, Anders Edenroth, Anna-Mari Kähärä and Timothy C. Takach. In the Evening Longing concert also vibraphonist Panu Savolainen plays with KYN. The lighting design by Mika Venhovaara makes the landscape created by different texts deeper.
All KYN's three commissions will be heard in its entirety in the autumn 2020.
