Nieguid duovdagat (Dreamscapes) is an entity that combines music and moving images, in which Sámi musician Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman’s, also known as Ánnámáret, music takes the audience to imaginary fells. The entity gains influence from both the rich tradition of joik and the Sami area’s lively culture, nature and everyday life, by taking the experiencer to strongly experiential worlds by means of images and music. In this work, these components achieve a sounding and resonating form, which embodies and concretises the seek for origins and the revival of tradition, while also considering its good and more challenging aspects.
“The theme of the concert is important to me and it has been developed during a personal process, when I listened to joiks that belonged to my family from archive recordings. The Nieguid duovdagat concept expresses thoughts about life at the turning point of traditional and modern culture. I am particularly interested in why we have the need to study history and our roots. What does it signify to us? Is it the expression of a personal need, a question of developing an identity or a political action? Is it even possible to revive culture?”, Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman wonders. The work courageously combines new and old while retaining the characteristics of joik tradition. Ánnámáret's joik, the sounds of the old traditional Finnish bow lyre played by Ilkka Heinonen and the Japanese shakuhachi flute played by Turkka Inkilä intertwine with electronic music and the landscapes of Marja Viitahuhta’s videos.
