See Markku Valtonen's exhibition Sekalaista sakkia in Tiketti Galleria

In Sekalaista sakkia exhibition you will be able to see Markku Valtonen’s humoristically serious and editorialized sculptures and paintings. Valtonen is a self-taught artist who has been interested in sculpting and drawing comics since childhood. The exhibition is open until September 3rd.

Markku Valtonen is a rock musician from Helsinki who has shifted towards visual arts over time as he started to do sculpting during his long tours with his band. Valtonen is best known as the guitarist and songwriter for Kelpo Pojat. The band’s last gig so far was in the spring of 2015 in Tavastia.

Valtonen’s material is wood which he has used since the 1990’s. The newest pieces are made from wood, terracotta sculptures coated with clay and oil paintings. Most of the pieces however are painted wood sculptures.

Markku Valtonen’s work radiates impish humor that won’t leave spectators cold. Valtonen’s newest works cover things important to him in his personal life. You can see poverty and misery in them, which are issues well known to Valtonen through the experiences of his inner circle. Valtonen narrates how everyday tasks and surviving has been made difficult for him.

Markku Valtonen’s works has been seen in Mänttä’s Gustaf- museum since the museum was established. The wooden sculptures representing factory workers telling their own stories were the first exhibition at the museum. A new spot was found for the sculptures after the exhibition itself finished.
