Those Helsinki Vampires, The 69 Eyes, have indeed paid their dues long ago by playing their dark glam rock since 1989 – precisely 25 years this September. To celebrate the anniversary the band will play two gigs at the legendary Tavastia club in Helsinki on Saturday, Septeber the 6th: first they will perform for younger audience and later, when the night starts to fall, they will play a concert for over 18-year-olds. Both concerts are supported by a young Helsinki-based band called Philadelphia Dynamite.
“It all began at Tavastia Club – that’s where we used to hang out, get drunk, see bands, fight for girls and eventually even meet each other. Our biggest goal was to play there some day as well and that goal turned out to be our first bigger gig only after a couple of months of being a band. We started the band in a piss-reeking cellar (there was no toilet so we had to learn to piss into empty wine bottles) in Kurvi, Helsinki in September of 1989, precisely 25 years ago. We started out playing some cover songs of The Stooges, Dead Boys and Alice Cooper but soon started writing some original horror glam punk songs as well. To celebrate this quarter-century-long road of rock ’n’ roll, we’re playing two shows at Tavastia, the place where it all began. The first show is all ages – that's how I actually started hanging out there as well, as I saw Lords Of The New Church there in the mid-80’s…”, remembers singer Jyrki 69.
The 69 Eyes’ double album “The Best Of Helsinki Vampires” (Virgin/EMI) was released at the end of last year.
