International Theatre Festival Baltic Circle announces 2015 programme

This year's Baltic Circle Festival takes place 10-14 November in Helsinki. The international festival for contemporary theatre welcomes the work of two artists for the first time in Finland: the Japanese director and playwright Toshiki Okada and his company chelfitsch, and the Swedish choreographer Mårten Spångberg. The five-day festival programme is now announced and ticket sales have started. Tickets are available now.

Last year, the festival sparked a discussion on the relationships between arts, politics and societal movements in the piece Ceci n'est pas… by Dries Verhoeven and in the Finnish Arts Policy Event . This year's festival continues the discussion in, for example, the Skills of Economy and Zartivism projects.

“The programme includes celebration, death, compassion, beauty, love and rage. You are invited to spend time together – generously – as many of the performances are durational, collective events”, says Satu Herrala, Artistic Director, Baltic Circle Festival

The piece Super Premium Soft Double Vanilla Rich by Toshiki Okada and chelfitsch, and The Internet by Mårten Spångberg both approach contemporary society and globalised culture through distinctive and exquisite forms. In addition to international guests, the festival welcomes works by emerging Finnish artists. The festival's local premieres - Vanitas by Anna Torkkel and Wake (Ruumiinvalvojaiset) by the Post-MJ Era Institute Of Consciousness - examine death in the light of 17th century painting and ’80s-’90s pop icon Michael Jackson, respectively. Wake is a sequel to the performance Neverland premiered at the URB 15 festival at Helsinki's Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art.

Anna Paavilainen reveals the gender bias and structural violence of the theatre world in her bold and personal monologue PLAY RAPE. The performance will be presented in collaboration with Klockriketeatern. In addition to the performance, the festival hosts a post performance discussion with Hanna Helavuori (director, Theatre Info Finland), Elina Knihtilä (professor of acting, Theatre Academy Helsinki) and Mika Myllyaho (director, Finnish National Theatre). The Zartivism project produced by a group of 16-25 year-olds, and the Skills of Economy: For the Love and Fear of Welfare session curated by Jussi Koitela, invite the audience to join societal processes intertwining, e.g., art, economy and activism.

The festival programme also includes a film screening of The Moscow Trials by Swiss director Milo Rau , which tackles freedom of speech and the Russian judicial system through means of political theatre, as well as workshops by the Other Spaces collective, Toshiki Okada and Mårten Spångberg.

The main partner of this year's Baltic Circle festival is the new performance art production house Mad House Helsinki located in Suvilahti, a disused power plant. The Tiivistämö space and the Lounge of the Ihana Bar weave a permeable social space where the festival experience deepens. The Lounge evenings are accompanied by, e.g., electro artist Johanna Porola. The Baltic Circle festival is directed for the first time by the duo Satu Herrala as Artistic Director and Hanna Nyman as Executive Director.
